Interview: Jersey

Today we’re joined by Jersey. Jersey is a phenomenal self-taught digital artist. She does some work with traditional media, but prefers digital art. Jersey enjoys designing her original characters, which are so adorable. Her use of line and color demonstrates a really amazing eye, as you’ll soon see. My thanks to her for taking the time to participate in this interview.

WORK

Please, tell us about your art.

I am a [self-taught] Digital Artist! I work in Traditional Arts too, but digital is my favorite. I draw with my mouse on various software [I talk about those below] and I enjoy drawing my OCs.

What inspires you?

Music has always been an inspiration. Recently I found bands like Andrew Jackson Jihad, Ramshackle Glory, and Ghost Mice, and I enjoy listening to them while I draw. Friends have also been a huge motivator over the years, particularly in the consistent support they’ve shown for my art- even when I first started, which says it all. Because I was awful.

What got you interested in your field?  Have you always wanted to be an artist?

I started Digital Art in 2010, though I had been doing Traditional Art years before that. I was really pushed into my field when I found this place called DoInk in 2011. It was an excellent Flash Animation website, and had a fantastic community along with it. Tied with both, I improved there tremendously. People liked my art and OCs, and I wanted to create more. It was closed in September 2012, and now I use Microsoft Paint, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop.

Do you have any kind of special or unique signature, symbol, or feature you include in your work that you’d be willing to reveal?

Geometry! My style is very oriented on shapes. Does that count?

What advice would you give young aspiring artists?

Keep going! I’ve insulted my 2011 artwork here already, but that shows what practice can do. You will get better! It might seem impossible now, and I assure that it will take time, but it is well worth it. Hell! If you really love your field, don’t even think about the talent aspect- do it for the passion. That’s what I did.

ASEXUALITY

Where on the spectrum do you identify?

I am Aromantic Asexual! Pizza is good.

Have you encountered any kind of ace prejudice or ignorance in your field?  If so, how do you handle it?

Outside my field? Not too regularly, but I am aware that Arophobia and Acephobia exist, and I just avoid the problem and ignore it. Best not associate myself with bigotry. Plus, my friends are often LGBTA+, so I’m fine there too.

What’s the most common misconception about asexuality that you’ve encountered?

Aromanticism and Asexuality are completely different. It’s bothersome how often they’re confused, and how much they’re tied together. Aromanticism and Asexuality are related, but not the same. I might be Aromantic Asexual, but other Aromantics or Asexuals could identify different. That’s okay.

What advice would you give to any asexual individuals out there who might be struggling with their orientation?

You are valid. Even if your experience as an Asexual is different from mine, that does not undermine your Asexuality. That said, do not worry that you might be wrong. Sexuality is complicated, and it is alright if your orientation moves around. You’re still fine how you are.
