Interview: Charles Vincent Wolfe

Today we’re joined by Charles Vincent Wolfe.  While they’re mainly a digital artist, Charles has dabbled in a number of different subjects and styles.  They’re a very talented and versatile artist.  My thanks to them for taking the time to participate in this interview.

WORK

Please, tell us about your art.

Technically, I am a digital artist primarily! I use it admittedly as a bit of a crutch because I am color deficient, so differentiating certain colors can be tricky. Subject matter-wise, my art is kind of eclectic I suppose! I have a really heavy interest in way too many things so it just leaks out everywhere. I draw fantasy and sci-fi stuff, cartoony styled things, more realistic stuff. I doodle up humans and animals and monsters and also I am 100% furry fandom garbage haha. It’s so much all over the place I honestly struggle to describe it myself.

What inspires you?

A lot. Probably the biggest inspiration to me is the natural world though, animals, plant life, science as a whole is dear to me. Paleobiology is a specifically important and driving thing to me. Simpler things catch my eyes too! Sometimes the people I see on the street, the way a building looks, seeing an insect on a window, it all is absorbed and can spark entire worlds up in the ol’ noggin haha. I feast on visual information.

What got you interested in your field?  Have you always wanted to be an artist?

I’ve been drawing since I was super little, but it’s always been a bit of a struggle between whether I want to do art, or science, though to be honest if I went into the biological field my ideal job would be scientific illustration, specifically paleo art. I used to attend an art school with an animation major before I dropped out, and right now I am kind of at a crossroads between whether or not I should continue doing animation and illustration, or if I should move towards paleobiology. My primary interest in the field of art is honestly to teach people. I want to teach people what can be seen, both in terms of human society but also outside of humanity, with what animals are here now, and used to live on this Earth.

Do you have any kind of special or unique signature, symbol, or feature you include in our work that you’d be willing to reveal?

Yep! I use this little bird fella for my work, it’s my main watermark, and then I have a smaller pixel signature with my initials that I use as well.

(Note: Charles has since designed a new signature, which can be found towards the end of this interview)

What advice would you give young aspiring artists?

Always practice! I don’t think I much agree with the idea of DRAWING UNTIL YOUR ARMS FALL OFF anymore, so much as like… Push yourself to the boundaries you understand as a unique individual. Do what you can, push where you know you haven’t gone before. Pull back when you recognize your limits. Do not be afraid of failure, do not be too upset when you cannot create art the way you intended the first time you try it, especially if it is new to you.

ASEXUALITY

Where on the spectrum do you identify?

Uh, that’s a bit tricky but I mainly identify as a sex-repulsed asexual, while also being autochorissexual. Being autochorissexual means that I have a bit of a disconnect between the concept of myself, and arousal. I can be engaged with sexual content in media, but the thought of it involving myself, or real people, repulses me greatly. A bit of T.M.I I suppose, but I do have a hearty fondness for xenofiction and some furry porn. If it’s not an actual human being and I ain’t a part of it, it’s cool by my book haha. As for the romantic side I don’t even know, I just sort of say I’m romantic asexual, because I know I’m not aromantic, but I don’t know what I’m romantically interested in despite being in a relationship myself. Gotta love how muddy sexuality can be, huh?

Have you encountered any kind of ace prejudice or ignorance in your field?  If so, how do you handle it?

I would say the biggest issues I have encountered is invasiveness. Once it’s become known that I am ace, I get questions like “are you scared of sex?” or “DO YOU MASTURBATE???” and the list goes on and on and on. It doesn’t matter what my answers are for those questions, they have no place being asked when my sexuality isn’t even relevant to a conversation and the people asking them don’t need to know those kinds of answers at all! I usually tell people off admittedly and will say when I feel they are invading my privacy haha.

What’s the most common misconception about asexuality that you’ve encountered?

That aces can’t feel love. I mean come on, give me a break! We ain’t heartless and love ain’t just romantic, it comes in all sortsa different flavors.

What advice would you give to any asexual individuals out there who might be struggling with their orientation?

Biggest one, you are not broken. Even if your asexuality is the product of abuse, which is just as valid as those who aren’t, you are not broken for it. You are still wonderful and you know love is not just romantic, it’s not just sexual, love is a wonderful and powerful thing that binds people together even if they are platonic. You are not broken, and you are not alone.

Finally, where can people find out more about your work?

I go by the username VCR-WOLFE on Tumblr, deviantART, Weasyl, and FurAffinity! I also have a twitter account, VCR_WOLFE. Fair warning, I am not shy nor a stranger to drawing nonsexual nudity and stylized gore frequently with my work!
