Interview: Yami Okami

Today we’re joined by Yami Okami.  Yami is an amazing cosplayer and a fanfiction writer.  He is quite active on Tumblr and open to all asks.  My thanks to him for taking the time to participate in this interview.

Please, tell us about your art.

Well, my art consists of cosplay and dabbles in the fanfiction area. I enjoy making people smile by doing something silly in cosplay or writing a fanfiction idea that something no one has seen before. I normally just play around in my cosplay and hope to bring smiles to people’s faces and I write to make people happy. I have attempted to write my own stories before but I quickly lose the character’s personality amongst the chapters and it is difficult for me, although I am working on trying to write my own story!

What inspires you?

An inspiration of mine is mostly the actors I favor in the movie field, Tom Hiddleston in fact. I find that although any character he plays on screen he is still sweet, caring and understanding while still expressing the characters dark turmoil. I also find other inspiration to cosplay from anime, comics, movies and shows! My current cosplay of the moment is from my favorite anime Soul Eater, and it’s still in the works. I find it fascinating that although times are really tough or are seemingly impossible, people still can fight against the darkness of their mind and power through the pain for the smiles of others.

What got you interested in your field?  Have you always wanted to be an artist?

As interestingly boring as it is, from a very young age I have wanted to be an actor/actress. I always found it entrancing how people can put on different clothes and pretend to be someone else to make so many people happy or eager to go and see/do something! I have noticed quite recently that it makes me supremely proud and pleased with myself when I can give someone happiness or joy from something I worked on.

Do you have any kind of special or unique signature, symbol, or feature you include in our work that you’d be willing to reveal?

Not necessarily, but I have been trying to come up with one, although it has been odd trying to make a symbol for myself.

What advice would you give young aspiring artists?

Even if you feel like you can’t do it, or you feel that if you aren’t pretty enough to show off your face, body, curves, etc., don’t let that prohibit you from doing what you want to do. If you don’t think you can write or draw well, try drawing/writing different things and have a close friend help you with it! You can only get better with practice and patience.

Where on the spectrum do you identify?

I’m panromantic asexual.

Have you encountered any kind of ace prejudice or ignorance in your field?  If so, how do you handle it?

I had an anon ask me how I can be ace if I’m so attractive. Although I was honored at the compliment, I found it hurtful that people believe that I couldn’t be Ace if I was pretty. I also had someone message me that how I felt wasn’t real and that I was just experiencing a ‘phase’. What I did in response was delete those anons and I thought carefully over my next choices; what I ended up doing was go on YouTube and listen to my favorite band, Steam Powered Giraffe. I felt pity towards the people who use prejudice against others, and I felt sorry for those askers, and not me because they close off new friends like that. I hope other people don’t experience that!

What’s the most common misconception about asexuality that you’ve encountered?

“So, you can make another you pop out of your head?”

“Does that mean you aren’t ever going to date?”- A few examples of what people have said to me upon hearing I was asexual.  Although multiple people say that I can’t be romantically involved with someone even though I’m asexual, I find that any person I can help understand is one person closer to acceptance amongst people and the world.

What advice would you give to any asexual individuals out there who might be struggling with their orientation?

If you feel as though you are any less than any of your peers for the reason of your asexuality, don’t worry. There are many people who feel or have felt the same way you do; all you need to do is learn more about how you feel, what you want, and understand that some people won’t understand what you and many others are going through and that is their loss, not yours. Although it’s a common phrase amongst the internet community it still rings clear and true; it will get better. For one day the oppressors, the bullies, and the dark feelings will go away and melt into the past, in which case you will have beaten the darkness and grown into a beautiful/handsome person.

Finally, where can people find out more about your work?

You can contact me or find any of my work on either of my Tumblrs: is my ask blog specifically for my Soul Eater cosplay, and is my original account which I will answer any asks and take requests to write stories for anyone. Anyone can ask me anything; I am open to all questions and I will help anyone who needs it.

Thank you so much, Yami, for participating in this interview and project.  It’s very much appreciated.
