Interview: Etheralsnows

Today we’re joined by Etheralsnows.  Etheralsnows is a remarkably talented visual artist who specializes in digital drawing.  Their work on deviantART is absolutely wonderful.  Most of their work is cartoon and anime inspired style.  My thanks to them for taking the time to participate in this interview.

WORK

Please, tell us about your art.

My art is characters. Drawing them and posing them and putting them threw situations I find interesting, or funny, and sometimes depressing. My style is a mix of cartoon semi realism and anime but I’m planning to branch out and explore different styles. Currently most of my work is fan art but I’m working of expanding more into more original art soon.

What inspires you?

Other peoples creativity inspires me a lot, seeing something that another person has done is just so amazing it makes me want to go and do my own amazing thing. Or sometimes I can get inspired when playing my favorite game or reading an engaging story and I feel a strong want to just draw the characters before me.

What got you interested in your field?  Have you always wanted to be an artist?

I have been in art classes since I was 4 years old. I never went a year in school without one till I was in college. But no I didn’t always want to be an artist. I always loved art but I didn’t think I was good, or maybe I just didn’t think it could be anything other than something fun to do. I didn’t really seriously start thinking of being an artist till 6th grade when a friend asked me to show her how to draw. It was the first time I felt good about my art and after that I started to practice and practice. And now even though I’m not the best I’m still a pretty good artist and want to use this skill to bring characters in my head or other peoples’ heads to life.

Do you have any kind of special or unique signature, symbol, or feature you include in our work that you’d be willing to reveal?

Some of my works have a small pentagram that’s not complete so it looks like an A with a circle instead of a star. That’s my signature. I don’t put it on all of my pieces though cause I’m rather forgetful, but I try.

What advice would you give young aspiring artists?

Don’t give up. Even if other people’s art seems better than yours even if you practice really hard and you don’t seem to improve. Even if everyone else is telling you there’s no money in art, or you can’t do it, or gives you any other discouragement. Don’t. Give. Up. You’ll get there some day.

ASEXUALITY

Where on the spectrum do you identify?

Aromantic Asexual

Have you encountered any kind of ace prejudice or ignorance in your field?  If so, how do you handle it?

I haven’t

What’s the most common misconception about asexuality that you’ve encountered?

That it’s just a phase and I’ll grow out of it.

What advice would you give to any asexual individuals out there who might be struggling with their orientation?

That it’s real and you’re not alone. Being ace with all this sex shoved at us in ads and TV might be difficult but there are so many wonderful people who also share your pain.

Finally, where can people find out more about your work?

On Tumblr and DeviantArt At etheralsnow

Thank you so much, Etheralsnows, for participating in this interview and project.  It’s very much appreciated.
